Gutters and Downpipes
in Paarl
Gutters in Paarl have one job in winter: take the rain off the roof and away from the walls. We install, repair and clear gutters and downpipes, and send each downpipe to stormwater, never the sewer.

- Leaves gathering in the gutter
- A lap in the flashing above the gutter
An overflowing gutter soaks the wall, not just the garden
A gutter that is blocked, sagging or leaking at a joint pours water down the face of the wall below it. Through a Paarl winter that keeps a wall wet from the top down, and the marks it leaves inside are easy to mistake for rising damp or a roof leak.
Gutters fail in ordinary ways: leaves and grit in the run, joints that have opened, brackets that let the gutter sag so it holds water, and downpipes that are too few or blocked at a bend. Most of it can be seen from a ladder.
Where the downpipe ends is a by-law question
Drakenstein’s Water and Sanitation Services By-law of 2023 has two sections aimed squarely at roof water, set out in the panel, and contravening either is an offence. The sewer is there for wastewater; rain from a roof belongs in the stormwater system.
It matters most in the weeks the drains are already full. During the May 2026 storms the municipality reported blocked stormwater systems among its flooding incidents.
The other end of the gutter matters as much. SANS 10400-L wants flat-roof gutters designed so that stormwater cannot get inside if they block, and the NHBRC’s 2014 draft requirements say gutters must not overflow into the home. At ground level, Australian heritage guidance lists leaking gutters and downpipes among the causes of damp mistaken for rising damp.
Follow each downpipe to where it ends. If it runs into a drain gully, it should be moved to stormwater or open ground away from the walls.

What a gutter check covers
Six things, from the roof edge down to the ground.
The run
Leaves, grit washed off the tiles and anything else that holds water in the gutter.
Falls
Whether the gutter falls to its outlets or sags between brackets and holds water.
Joints and corners
Where sections meet and at the corners, the usual places for a drip.
Outlets and downpipes
Enough of them for the roof they serve, and clear at the top and at the bends.
Where the water ends up
Stormwater, a channel or open ground away from the walls, never a sewer gully.
The roof edge
Tiles, fascia and the valleys that feed the gutter, which overflow when it cannot keep up.
What you can hold us to on gutters
Each one is written into the quote, so you can check it.
-
Every downpipe’s route written down
The quote says where each downpipe discharges, and none goes to the sewer.
-
Water run through before we leave
A hose down the roof shows the water reaching the outlets and leaving the house.
-
Fascia problems flagged on the quote
If the board behind the gutter has rotted, you hear about it before the gutter goes up.
How a gutter job runs
From the ladder to the downpipe’s last bend.
Check
The run, the falls, the joints, the downpipes and where each one discharges.
Quote
Clearing, repairs or new gutters, with each downpipe’s route written down.
Do the work
Clear, reseal, re-hang or replace, and re-route downpipes where needed.
Run water through
A hose down the roof to show the water reaching the outlets and going away from the house.
How gutter work is priced
Clearing, repairs and new gutters are different jobs, and the quote keeps them apart.
What the written quote lists
- Clearing the run and the downpipes
- Repairs to joints, corners, brackets and outlets
- New gutter and downpipe lengths, where needed
- Re-routing downpipes away from the sewer or the walls
What moves the number
- The length of gutter and the number of downpipes
- Height, and whether a ladder will do or scaffolding is needed
- The gutter type and material
- The state of the fascia the gutter is fixed to
If the fascia board behind the gutter has rotted, the gutter cannot be fixed until the board is replaced. The quote will say so.

How much do gutters cost in Paarl?
New gutters depend on the length, the number of downpipes, the material and the height of the roof. Repairs and clearing are priced by what they involve. We look first and quote in writing.
Can my downpipe go into the sewer?
No. Drakenstein’s 2023 water by-law forbids letting stormwater or flow from downpipes enter the municipal sewer, and contravening it is an offence.
How often should gutters be cleared?
At least once before the winter rain, which in Paarl means before May, and again after heavy leaf fall if trees overhang the roof.
Why does my gutter overflow when it is clean?
It may be too small for the roof feeding it, falling the wrong way, short of downpipes, or fed by a valley that dumps more water at one spot than it can take.
Are seamless gutters better?
Fewer joints mean fewer places to leak, which is their main advantage. A jointed gutter that is well fixed, well sealed and properly sloped can work as well. The fall and the outlets matter more than the type.
Can a blocked gutter cause damp inside the house?
Yes. Water spilling down a wall keeps it wet from the top, and a gutter behind a parapet can fill and spill into the building when it blocks. The marks inside are often taken for rising damp or a roof leak.
What about old fibre-cement gutters?
They may be asbestos cement. The Asbestos Abatement Regulations bar cutting or drilling it with power tools, preparing its surface for coating and fixing anything onto it, and repair or removal is work for a registered asbestos contractor. Mention it when you book.
Can I collect the roof water in a tank?
Yes. Drakenstein’s by-law says a rainwater tank that is not connected to the drinking water installation does not need the approval other alternative water systems do, and rainwater may never be connected to a mains-fed installation.
